2008 Annual Awards Dinner

June 10, 2008 - In a speech before 350 attendees at the New York Financial Writers Association Annual Awards Dinner, billionaire investor Carl Icahn discussed his early days in finance, his current battles with the Yahoo board of Icahndirectors, questionable management tactics in American companies, and serious issues facing the American economy.  Audience members submitted queries that were addressed in an extended question and answer period moderated by Myron Kandel, CNN’s founding financial editor. Also at the dinner, legendary automotive reporter Jerry Flint of Forbes magazine was named the 2008 winner of the Elliott V. Bell Award.  Named for the first president of the NYFWA, the Bell Award recognizes an individual’s significant, long-term contribution to the profession of financial journalism.  He received the award from William Baldwin, editor of Forbes.  Flint also received letters of congratulations from the CEOs of Daimler and the big three American automotive companies (General Motors, Ford and Chrysler). Veteran business journalist William Holstein made the presentation.

Marketwatch’s Steve Gelsi, the 2008 NYFWA president, MC’d the event.  In addition, the NYFWA awarded ten $3,000 scholarships to area students who are interested in pursuing careers in business and financial journalism.  The event was held in the Broadway Ballroom of the Marriott Marquis Hotel in Times Square, New York City.
