Remembering Jerry Sherman

Jerry Sherman, 83, a long-time member of the New York Financial Writers' Association, died peacefully at his home near Albany, NY, where he lived in recent years with Bobbie, his wife of 58 years. Jerry began his career in journalism at the tender age of 16 as a copy boy on the New York Journal of Commerce while he was still in high school in the Bronx. He rose to reporter, associate editor and foreign correspondent and joined the NYFWA in the late 1940s. He moved to public relations in 1952 and remained active as an associate member, performing in the Financial Follies for many years. He was a member for more than 60 years. After working at several PR agencies, he formed his own firm, Jerry Sherman Associates, and then joined Gulf & Western Corp. in 1979 to head its public relations. He took early retirement in 1990, but then rejoined the company, then named Paramount Communications Inc., in 1992 as senior vice president, communications, a post he held until the company was taken over by Viacom in 1994. On the occasion of its 50th anniversary, the NYFWA honored him for distinguished service to financial journalism. A funeral service was held Nov. 27 in Shrub Oak, NY. Jerry's family is planning to hold a memorial service in New York City at a date to be determined. Bobbie Sherman's address is 10 Eastmount Drive, Slingerland, NY 12154.Her e-mail is mambo218@aol.com
