December 21st, 2020 – Breaking Down the Story: Trapped Inside an Assisted Living Facility During the Pandemic

Join members and friends of the New York Financial Writers’ Association for a reporting club webinar looking at the story behind the story of the devastation COVID-19 wrought on one assisted living facility in the Bronx. 

Ava Kofman (@Avakofman) will discuss how she went about researching, reporting and writing her recent article in ProPublica:  “We Don’t Even Know Who Is Dead or Alive”: Trapped Inside an Assisted Living Facility During the Pandemic. 

Kofman’s story takes us inside one of the hardest hit assisted living facilities in New York City and the toll the pandemic has taken on its residents — both those who succumbed to the virus and those who survived.

Kofman joined ProPublica as a technology reporter in January 2019, after working as a contributing reporter at The Intercept, where she covered algorithms, artificial intelligence and surveillance technology. Her work has also appeared in the New York Times Magazine, Harper's Magazine, The Atlantic and The Guardian. NYFWA board member and Bloomberg reporter Olivia Carville (@livcarville) will moderate this event.
