New York, NY, November 11, 2025 -The New York Financial Writers’ Association announced at last week’s Financial Follies gala that Marty Schenker, currently an editor-at-large at Bloomberg News, has been named the 49th Elliott V. Bell Award winner. The award, which was created in 1976, honors journalists who have made a significant contribution to the field of financial journalism and is named after NYFWA’s inaugural president, Elliott V. Bell. Schenker joins a list of Elliott V. Bell Award alumni that includes the likes of David FaberEllen PollockAndy SerwerJohn McCorryGretchen MorgensonJames B. The Elliott V. Bell Award Committee selected Schenker because, both during his career at the Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg, he has been revered for his fairness, news judgement, ethics and people skills, and for his ability to bridge the gap that often exists between the print and broadcast worlds. Throughout his career, reporters, editors and anchors have sought his advice, encouragement and mentorship on the execution of their stories and on-air presentation

Schenker began his career in the early 1970s as a proofreader in the New York bureau of the Wall Street Journal, quickly rising through the ranks to copy editor. Early in his career he was sent to the Wall Street Journal’s Washington D.C. bureau for a short stint to help with coverage of the Watergate scandal, before returning to New York and taking on positions ranging from Markets Editor and Senior Editor of the “Second Front.” During his years at the Wall Street Journal, Schenker’s accomplishments included working in Brussels as a founding editor of the Wall Street Journal Europe (where he worked with Elliott V. Bell winners John Huey (2014) and Matt Winkler (2003), serving at the National News Editor, as Managing Editor of the Dow Jones Investor Network, news director of S+, a television news partnership between Dow Jones and ITT, and eventually the Wall Street Journal’s coordinator of its partnership with CNBC. In 2000 he moved to Bloomberg News, where he initially headed Bloomberg Television. During his time at Bloomberg he has served as Senior Executive Editor of Top News; Editor in charge of Government and Economics, based in Washington; and Chief Content Officer in New York, before moving into his current role as Editor-at-Large.

Founded in 1938, the NYFWA supports excellence in financial journalism by offering panels on timely industry topics, networking events, scholarships to journalism students, and awards for outstanding work. In early 2026 the NYFWA will hold a dedicated award ceremony for Schenker that will include a panel discussion tailored to his experience in financial journalism.
