November 17th, 2020 – Breaking Down the Story: What Happened Inside Ed Buck's Apartment

Join members and friends of the New York Financial Writers’ Association for the first event in a new reporting club series about the story behind the story, where journalists from across the country will speak about the articles they've written. These webinars will cover everything from idea generation to the reporting and writing process, the way the story was told, why it matters and what happened in the aftermath of publication.

In this first webinar, Jesse Barron (@_jessebarron) will join us to discuss his recent article in The New York Times Magazine called "What Happened Inside Ed Buck’s Apartment?" (https://www.nytimes.com/2020/09/16/magazine/ed-buck-case.html?action=click&module=Editors%20Picks&pgtype=Homepage).

Barron's article is a deep dive into a local crime story about how, and why, two young men died of meth overdoses inside a West Hollywood political donor's apartment. It weaves together many different themes about power, money, lies, addiction, media misinformation and predatory racial profiling. NYFWA board member and Bloomberg reporter Olivia Carville (@livcarville) will moderate the event.

When: November 17 @ 7 p.m. (EST)
