Former writer Barry Newman, author of “News to Me,” addressed members of the NYFWA on June 2, where he discussed some of the lessons he has learned during his years as a writer and gave members are few tips on gleaning the material needed in order to write compelling anecdotes.
The dog days of summer are finally upon us, so don't miss the chance to get out of the heat and spend some time socializing and networking with your fellow financial journalists at the NYFWA's July networking night. As always, the evening will feature light appetizers, and NYFWA members’ first two drinks are on us.

When the 10 recipients of this year’s NYFWA scholarships were awarded their scholarship checks on May 11, they also had the opportunity to learn about some of the early observations of a few NYFWA members who were in their shoes not long ago. Cezary Podkul, Sherry Hsieh and Laura Keller, all of whom are NYFWA members and novice journalists themselves, took the opportunity pass along advice to the scholarship recipients who will be following their footsteps into the world of financial journalism.
Longtime NYFWA member William (Bill) Smith passed away on May 2nd. Following is the obituary that ran in The New York Times:
William D. Smith, a former business reporter for The New York Times who covered the oil industry then worked for it as a media relations specialist for Exxon during the Exxon Valdez spill in 1989, died on May 2 in Park Ridge, N.J. He was 79.
His daughter, Bronwyn McElroy, said the cause was complications of Alzheimer’s disease.

The first step in building a strong relationship with a source is arranging in person meetings. That’s what the seasoned journalists of the New York Financial Writers’ Association’s dark arts of sourcing panel told the roughly 50 attendees at the April 14 event.

The Knight-Bagehot Fellowship and the International Labor Association of the United Nations invite NYFWA members to A tribute to Steve Greenhouse and Floyd Norris, an event co-hosted by the two organizations.
The evening will include a wine and cheese reception, followed by “The New Labor Journalism,” a panel hosted by Anya Schiffrin of Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs that will feature panelists Steve Greenhouse, former NY Times labor correspondent; Lydia DePillis of the Washington Post; and Ai-Jen Poo of the National Domestic Workers Alliance.
