NYFWA Members Learn Some of the Ins and Outs of Writing Good Anecdotes

Former writer Barry Newman, author of “News to Me,” addressed members of the NYFWA on June 2, where he discussed some of the lessons he has learned during his years as a writer and gave members are few tips on gleaning the material needed in order to write compelling anecdotes.

July 21, 2015 – The NYFWA's July Networking Night

The dog days of summer are finally upon us, so don't miss the chance to get out of the heat and spend some time socializing and networking with your fellow financial journalists at the NYFWA's July networking night. As always, the evening will feature light appetizers, and NYFWA members’ first two drinks are on us.

This event is only open to members in good standing. Guests of the NYFWA are welcome to attend for $15, which must be paid in advance.

2015 Scholarship Winners Get Advice From Young NYFWA Members

When the 10 recipients of this year’s NYFWA scholarships were awarded their scholarship checks on May 11, they also had the opportunity to learn about some of the early observations of a few NYFWA members who were in their shoes not long ago. Cezary Podkul, Sherry Hsieh and Laura Keller, all of whom are NYFWA members and novice journalists themselves, took the opportunity pass along advice to the scholarship recipients who will be following their footsteps into the world of financial journalism.

The Loss of Bill Smith

Longtime NYFWA member William (Bill) Smith passed away on May 2nd. Following is the obituary that ran in The New York Times:

William D. Smith, a former business reporter for The New York Times who covered the oil industry then worked for it as a media relations specialist for Exxon during the Exxon Valdez spill in 1989, died on May 2 in Park Ridge, N.J. He was 79.

His daughter, Bronwyn McElroy, said the cause was complications of Alzheimer’s disease.

June 2, 2015 –Using Anecdotes Well/June Networking Night

Join Barry Newman for a talk on ways to turn narrowly focused stories into narrative features for a broad audience of smart readers. Newman wrote for the Wall Street Journal, from the U.S. and abroad, for more than four decades. Most of his stories ran on the Journal's front page. While he's known for humor writing, his work dealt in accessible ways with serious subjects: immigration, macroeconomics, agriculture, development, trade, politics and foreign policy, to name a few.

May 28, 2015 – The NYFWA's 39th Elliott V. Bell Award Ceremony

Join members of the New York Financial Writers’ Association for the presentation of our 2014 Elliott V. Bell Award, which will be awarded to John Huey, former editor-in-chief of Time Inc. Huey is the 39th recipient of the Elliott V. Bell Award, which is named after the NYFWA’s founding president and which recognizes individuals who have made long-term contributions to financial journalism and have had a significant impact on the industry.

May 11, 2015 – May Networking Night/2015 Scholarship Presentations

Join your fellow NYFWA members, along with members of the next crop of financial journalists, for our May networking night. The evening will include presentations of the NYFWA’s 2015 scholarships, followed by a panel of recent entrants into the world of financial journalism who will discuss their first-impressions and experiences in their roles as novice business journalists, as well as how they got their foot in the door at the organizations where they landed their first jobs. As always, the evening will feature light appetizers and NYFWA members’ first two drinks are on us.

Dark Arts of Sourcing Event Examines Best Ways to Cultivate Sources

The first step in building a strong relationship with a source is arranging in person meetings. That’s what the seasoned journalists of the New York Financial Writers’ Association’s dark arts of sourcing panel told the roughly 50 attendees at the April 14 event.

In person you can discuss how your relationship networks overlap, which may make them more comfortable, or work on developing a different human connection, according to Lawrence Delevingne, CNBC.com’s Big Money enterprise reporter.

April 21, 2015 –A Tribute to Steve Greenhouse & Floyd Norris

The Knight-Bagehot Fellowship and the International Labor Association of the United Nations invite NYFWA members to A tribute to Steve Greenhouse and Floyd Norris, an event co-hosted by the two organizations.

The evening will include a wine and cheese reception, followed by “The New Labor Journalism,” a panel hosted by Anya Schiffrin of Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs that will feature panelists Steve Greenhouse, former NY Times labor correspondent; Lydia DePillis of the Washington Post; and Ai-Jen Poo of the National Domestic Workers Alliance.

NYFWA member Jeff John Roberts has been named a reporter for Fortune, where he will cover law and policy. Prior to joining Fortune, Jeff was with GigaOM.
