Longtime NYFWA member Joseph J. Duome passed away on October 25th, just a week after celebrating his 97th birthday with all of his family. His funeral was held on October 31st at St. Andrew’s Roman Catholic Church in Newtown, PA. And his mark on the NYFWA was made incredibly clear in the many fond memories members who knew Duome shared upon learning of the news:

The CUNY Graduate School of Journalism has announced the first winners of its newly launched McGraw Fellowship for Business Journalism. Tom Mashberg, Nate Halverson and Jay Greene are the first recipients of the fellowships, which were created by the Harold W. McGraw, Jr. Center for Business Journalism to support long-form investigative and enterprise stories on critical issues related to the U.S. economy and business.

Spencer Soper Named E-Commerce Reporter at Bloomberg

Congratulations to NYFWA member Spencer Soper on being named as an e-commerce reporter at Bloomberg News. A recent Knight-Bagehot fellow at Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, Spencer was previously a business reporter at the Allentown Morning Call, where he broke an attention-grabbing story on the working conditions at Amazon’s warehouses.

On June 18,2014, The New York Financial Writers’ Association presented its Elliott V. Bell Award to Tom Herman for his contribution to financial journalism. In his 40 years at The Wall Street Journal, Herman’s coverage of taxes and his ability to demystify the code for millions of Americans helped make him a legend and a stalwart in the newsroom. More than 50 NYFWA members and guests attended this year's scholarship presentation, where winners were each presented $3,000 checks towards the cost of their education. Once again, ten winners were awarded scholarships, with winners representing schools including Columbia Graduate School of Journalism, CUNY Graduate School of Journalism, New York University and Syracuse University.

Remembering Jerry Goldstein

Longtime NYFWA friend Jerry Goldstein, director of the Financial Follies for several decades, passed away May 5, at the age of 91. His funeral was held on May 6, at 12:45 p.m. at Sinai Chapels, 162-05 Horace Harding Expressway, Fresh Meadows, New York.
